How to have fun and cool off in the heat with the kids

So, it looks like heatwaves are now the norm in the UK.

For some, it can be a chance to bask in the sunshine, top up tans and enjoy a much needed dose of (rather intense) vitamin D.

For others, like those who do physical work (like us!) it can be unbearable. Especially in London where it feels hotter and more humid.

And for the kids? Well, it can also be unbearable, but it can also be a chance to have lots of fun whilst trying to cool off!

So, with that in mind, this blog is all about our top 5 tips of ways for the kids to cool off and have fun in the sun, in London (and beyond), for little or no money…

1) Head to the fountain outside the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre called Appearing Rooms. Designed by Danish artist Jeppe Hein, this interactive sculpture creates ‘rooms’ by shooting walls of water that randomly rise and fall. Kids (and parents) can stand in random spots and suddenly, water can shoot up right underneath them, or miss them completely!

2) Find a lido for a cool down swim. There are several outdoor lidos dotted around London and, ask they’re not heated, they’re often much cooler than indoor pools, are larger and usually have nice, outdoor shaded areas to relax in too. One of my (Danny) favourites is Tooting Lido. But there is also the Brockwell Lido (Herne Hill), Parliament Hill Lido and more. Make sure you book before you go though!

3) Make ice lollies! This link is full of tasty recipes. The kids can enjoy making them and most of all, devouring them when they’ve set.

4) If you’re lucky enough to have a garden, set up a sprinkler in the garden. Not only will you give your lawn a much needed watering, the kids can have fun running through it over and over again! Sometimes it’s the simple pleasures…

5) Head to the seaside and have a dip in the cool North Sea or English Channel. If you live in London, it really doesn’t take that long or cost too much to get to the nearest beach. To the east, you can head to Whitstable, Margate or Deal (trains are regular and take around 90-120 minutes). Or south you can head to Brighton. Although it can get very busy there by the main pier, so best to head west towards Hove or east towards Rottingdean.

Whatever you decide to do when you have time off to cool down with the kids, remember to stay hydrated, don’t stay in the sun too long and most of all, have fun!
